During a meeting held with the Malta Developers Association on Monday afternoon, Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, Michael Farrugia said that in the coming days the Government will announce the new members of the MEPA Board.

He said the Goverment was looking at a revision of the local plans and on completion, which was hoped to be by the end of the year.

He pointed out that the Environment and Planning Commissions will be given the directive to give priority to projects funded by the European Union, projects that create jobs and also large scale projects.

Michael Farrugia also commented that the Government is committed to reducing red tape by 25%. He said that reports are currently being evaluated to be able to put this in place.

The Parliamentary Secretary spoke about the “deficiencies found in the Lands Department, including problems that have been going on for many years.”

A MEPA representative said that the separation of planning from the environment will be announced by the end of 2014, with other initiatives to be announced in the coming days to stimulate the development sector.

Michael Falzon the MDA President said that the MDA is the main voice of the developer and that as an association they are happy that their suggestions were listed in the PL electoral programme.

The MDA Deputy President Sandro Chetcuti spoke on the review of local plans “which contain many errors and anomalies” and stressed that there is need for the charges that are made by MEPA for applications to be reviewed soon.
