The Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FKNK) said in a statement today that it has been “informed that CABS the ‘partners’ from Germany of BirdLife Malta, will this year be concentrating their monitoring of the spring hunting season in Gozo.”
The FKNK advised its members that “CABS do not have the authority to act as police and have no authority to enter private property or go on to private land and are also subject to local legislation, including respecting the data protection act.”
The FKNK also urged its members “not to allow themselves to be provoked by CABS and should a member feel that this is the case, or that they are being harassed, then they should report it to the police by phoning 119, as well as reporting it to the FKNK.”
The FKNK concluded by calling on both the Minister of Interior and the Commissioner of Police to ensure the protection of the rights of all citizens, including Gozitan and Maltese hunters and trappers. FKNK said that it has also requested meeting with Minister Manuel Mallia and with the Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit.
The Government has said this evening that two men who were found hunting illegally at the Foresta 2000 Nature Reserve will be arraigned in court shortly.
Following reports of illegal hunting by some masked individuals, the ALE Police led by Inspector Ramon Mercieca, managed to catch the indviduals on site.
The Government also said that extra police had been drafted into the ALE section for the hunting season.
“This shows the severity with which the Government is working to see that there is no illegal hunting taking place and that hunters abide by the rules and laws of the country.”
“While hunters will have the chance to hunt under the rules of derogation spring, no violation of the law will not be tolerated,” the Governement said.
The statement by the Government said that on the initiative of the Parliamentary Sectretariat a Board has been set up for the purpose of drawing up a strategy for the monitoring and law enforcement during the hunting season.
The Board Members include representatives of the Government, Police, AFM, FKNK and Birdlife Malta. The chairman is Louis Cassar.
The Board has had regular meetings during the entire period of the derogation in order to continuously evaluate the situation of enforcement and compliance with the regulations and law.
The Goverment said that the general public may report any violation of the regulations at any Police Station in Malta or Gozo, or by calling 119.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that trapping of all birds is illegal, if this is the case why should the rights of trappers be protected?
Why is the BirdLife Malta be concentrating their monitoring of the spring hunting season only in Gozo ???
Read the article please Carmel, it says CABS is concentrating on Gozo. BirdLife Malta’s Springwatch is active on Malta and Gozo. In any case this is an FKNK statement not a CABS or BirdLife Malta one.
Lesley, yes I believe as a general rule it is illegal but in their “wisdom” the government has decided to grant derogations for the trapping of certain species. 🙁

Why only in Gozo ???
No Carmel …..read the article CABS who are partners and not Birdlife are allegedly concentrating on Gozo however if you read the more recent article about these abominations you will see that CABS and BirdLife are active throughout the Maltese islands. Don’t just accept the word of FKNK.
