The Malta Tourism Authority would like to announce that it has nominated three local landmarks, the Azure Window in Gozo, the Blue Lagoon in Comino and St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta into VirtualTourist.com’s quest to crown the “8th Wonder of the World.”
Public voting is now open at VirtualTourist.com, a leading travel research website that is part of the TripAdvisor Media Group.
With numerous Tourism Boards, Chambers of Commerce and Visitor Bureaus sending in a nomination, the public is asked to vote for their favourite landmark out of the more than 200 submissions.
Voters can visit www.virtualtourist.com to vote for these landmarks and have until 30th September to do so. The wonder with the most votes will be crowned the winner. The winner will receive exposure through a massive media relations campaign push from VirtualTourist.
“It’s wonderful to have a nomination from every corner of the world and hence we are thrilled to receive these landmarks as a nomination from the Maltese Islands,” said Giampiero Ambrosi, General Manager of VirtualTourist.com.

We feel that each one of these nominees qualifies as a true wonder.”

And when it collapses into the sea as bits of it have been doing already, what then? Has the MTA even as much as carried out a study into what can be done to protect the Azure Window from collapse? It’s a pity the Malta Tourism Authority didn’t step in when MEPA were giving permission for 40 lorry loads of quarry waste to be dumped on the fossil beds at Dwejra so that an outside sex scene could be filmed.
James, I don’t think you and I would be around when it collapses and when it eventually does, it will be a pity. To my recollection, there have been some studies to attempt to save it but as you know, in Malta the authorities crawl and not walk.
The stupidity that took place when they poured the sand in Dwejra will not be forgotten – then ruined it. Whoever made the decision, deserves a PhD in stupidity.
Unfortunately I think we might still be around. Every bad winter sees more bits coming off. The thing is people are still walking about on top of it and divers are still being taken underneath it.
Unfortunately ….after looking at the window recently, and in view of the collapse of the side the winter before last I believe the final collapse of the very thin top section is only a matter of a comparatively short time….A big sea in the next 5 years could do it 🙁
excuse my recollection of history/geography, but were the seven wonders of the world man made !

their are many natural rock formations in the world much better qualified to be called a wonder of the world
Agreed I think the 7 wonders of the world were all man made …..gardens of Babylon, colossus of Rhodes etc but there have also been lists of the 7 wonders of the natural world and by no stretch of the imagination can the azure window, lovely as it is, be compared with the Great Barrier Reef or the Grand Canyon.

People should be very aware of whats happening to the Azure Window and aware of
the dangers of swimming or diving close to it. Someone could get injured. Hopefully signs are posted nearby

Why haven’t the Ggantija temples been nominated when they are clearly of more historical importance with respect to the Azure window. Considering the fact that they are even older than the pyramids, which form part of the Seven Wonders of the World, I would prefer to have such valuable structures nominated rather than the natural arch, which although pleasant to look at, might disintegrate in the next few years. In addition, I believe that there are more admirable historical and geographic formations suited to form part of the Wonder of the World. Having said this I will obviously vote for The Azure Window since I am and will always be proud of the Maltese natural and cultural heritage.
A wonder of the world… is something man made. This can never be a wonder of the world.. and if it does become a wonder… let’s just say.. the grand canyon, the Himalayas range, the Alps, mount Etna and the valleys of Machu Pichu will be quite… upset…
I’m maltese, I love my country … imma let’s not abuse the azure window and claim it’s the best thing in the universe.
Btw, it was NOT nominated. Someone put it up as a nomination… I can easily put myself as a “nominee for wonder of the world” , and they’ll accept my nominations… just read the criteria required next time…
Personally my choice for one of the wonders of the world would have to be the temples at Petra.
