The Ggantija Archaeological Park and Ta’ Kola Windmill in Xaghra as well as the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa, will be open free of charge on Republic Day between 9.00am and 5.00pm, with the last entrance at 4.30pm.
The Ggantija Temples consist of two megalithic temples surrounded by a massive common boundary wall dating between 3600 BC and 3200 BC. The name of the complex is derived from the Maltese word “ggant” meaning giant. Ggantija Temples are listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Following the inauguration of the Archaeological Heritage Conservation Project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, Ggantija Temples Heritage Park now incorporates an interpretation centre focusing on Gozo’s prehistory.
The brand new interpretation centre provides an educational yet entertaining experience to all its visitors, taking them back in time by means of the new pathway which leads from the interpretation centre to the temples themselves.
Ta’ Kola Windmill in Xaghra, Gozo, is one of the few surviving windmills on the Maltese Islands dating back to the Knights’ Period. On the ground floor of the windmill one can observe the workshop containing a vast array of tools, some of which were originally manufactured by the owners of the mill. The living quarters are found on the first floor, including the kitchen, dining room and bedrooms.
A visit to the Inquisitor’s Palace includes the tribunal, the torture chamber, the piano nobile and the prison cells featuring graffiti carved by prisoners. Coupled with its extremely rich history, the Palace is also an architectural jewel which fuses different styles of architecture.
It is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind and the only one accessible to the public world wide.
Those visiting the Inquisitor’s Palace during the December 13th Open Day will also have the opportunity to visit for free the exhibition “Fort St Angelo – National and Cinematic Icon.”
In collaboration with the Cinema Heritage Group, this exhibition offers an evocative historic overview of the cinema in Fort St Angelo with the aid of several original artefacts and film footage relating to cinema heritage in Malta.
It is the latest of initiatives that Heritage Malta has accustomed the Maltese and foreign visitors to in its commitment to make our cultural heritage accessible to all.
