Mgarr ix-Xini designated as a dog-friendly beach for swimming in Gozo

Five new beaches have been identified as “dog-friendly” beaches where bathers can take their dogs, announced the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Roderick Galdes.
The beaches, including Mgarr ix-Xini in Gozo, were chosen after consultation with local councils as well as the health department, the Parliamentary Secretary said.
In Malta the beaches are Torri l-Abjad Bay near Mellieha, Rinella Bay, Kalkara, Imgiebah Bay, Selmun, Marsascala Bay and Zonqor Point.
Dog-friendly bays are also at the coast near Xwejni Bay in Gozo, in Malta at: Bahar ix-Caghaq behind the Splash and Fun complex, Tigne Point in Sliema, Marsaxlokk opposite Xatt is-Sajjieda, and l-Ahrax in Mellieha.
The Parliamentary Secretary said that dog owners will be allowed to use these beaches, however the owners are required to keep their pets on a leash when not in the sea and must carry waste bags with them. Failing this, fines will be handed out. with monitoring set to be carried out by local council officials and others from the Department of Health and the Animal Welfare Directorate.
It is also on the condition that they do not cause inconvenience to other bathers. Dog owners must also ensure that all mess, including possible animal excrement from the animals, is cleaned up and not left behind, bins are provided.
The water quality of the zones will be regularly monitored.

























People have been taking their dogs to Mgarr ix-Xini for years and they have never caused a problem to anyone. In fact Noel and Sandra who run the restaurant there have a lovely little dog called Gozo which greets everyone as they arrive and plays with the other dogs that people bring.
