The grand final of Giochi – it’s a knockout took place in Marsalforn on Thursday evening, between Zebbug, Xaghra, Xewkija, Sannat and Victoria.
Xewkija won the finale with 32 points, followed by Sannat 31, Victoria 31, Xaghra 24 and Zebbug 22.
The village games were held in the Gozo villages, including Qala, though the summer months.
There was a great turn out for the final, with large crowds to watch the fun and games, and all the teams had local supporters with them.
The teams were very well matched, which made for an exciting night for the supporters. As had happened in some of the summer games, the winners were only decided in the final game of the tug of war with all those taking part struggling valiantly until the end.
The games included a variety of fun games on land and in the sea such as canoeing, kangaroo sack race, 5 legged race, human aqueduct, the best waiter, matching flags and tug of war.
The event showcased performances by local dancers, including Gozo line dancers, the Centre Stage Academy, as well as local singers such as Alysia, Matthew Xuereb, Diana Formosa, Lea Attard, Mikela Pace, Miriana Farrugia, Stacey Camenzuli and Maryann Vella.
The trophy, medals and the tablets sponsored by TCTC were presented to the winners by Mr Christian Zammit, a representative of the Ministry for Gozo, while Mr Alvin Grech the CEO for Gozo Sports presented the vouchers supplied by Arkadia, Odyssey Bar & Restaurant, Gozo Express, Murella pizzeria and erra.
The organisers thanked all the sponsors: Ministry for Gozo, TCTC, Arkadia, Gozo Express, Odyssey Restaurant , errea, Sportsmania, Murella Pizzeria, Stephen’s snack bar, Ta Penellu Restaurant, L’aragosta, Pebbles Bar and Restaurant, lìoro da Napoli, Zebbug Canoeing, Unwine and the local councils of Qala, Sannat, Xewkija, Victoria, Xaghra and Zebbug.
This was a great family outing and the organisers said that they hope to be able to repeat the experience of the games once again next summer.
