Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Dr Ian Borg, has announced today that around €1 million in EU funds have been allocated on 19 projects related to the development of rural villages.

This comes under the European Fund for Rural Development under the LEADER Programme. The Parliamentary Secretary said among those benefiting are 10 Local Councils, and various NGOs, as well as small and medium enterprises that have activity in rural areas in Malta and Gozo.

These calls were made during the past few months, and are operated by the Local Action Groups (LAGs), and have now completed the whole process of selection.

Dr Borg explained that the projects include social and cultural activities, physical interventions aimed at improving infrastructure in rural villages in favour of sustainable tourism, as well as a strategic project, by the Gozo Tourism Association, to promote Gozo as a unique destination. There were also aids to small and medium enterprises so that they can better promote their product.

The LEADER programme for the years 2014-2020 will be allocated about 7 million; an increase of 3 million on the previous period, Dr Borg said.
