At the end of the Pontifical Mass of the Feast of St. George in Victoria, HE Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, gave the Missionary Mandate to a group of twelve – six people from Gozo and six other volunteers from Malta, who during the first fortnight of September, will visit Ethiopia to carry out missionary work among the poor.They will travel to the Missionary Movement “Jesus in thy Neighbour” founded by Mons. George Grima. In the group there are, among others, a young couple who only got married a year ago, together with other dedicated workers who will assist in building work.

The group will be helping to build homes for lepers in the neighbourhood of Ambo, as well as the construction of a church dedicated to St George.

The collection made during the Pontifical Mass, together with a Campaign of Generosity, which took place in the parish during the days of the feast, were donated to the cause. Also money collected from children who attended the Novena, was used to purchase Nutella for the children in Ethiopia.

Bishop Grech distributed copies of the Bible and a small cross to the lay missionaries. The Bishop said that he welcomed such initiatives and said that he supports all “new works” of this kind, to help express the core mission of the Church, to be close to the poor.
