‘Gozo in Figures 2015’ is being published by the NSO one year after the setting up of the Regional Statistics Unit in Gozo under the auspices of the Malta Statistics Authority.

It is, in fact, a sequel to two similar collections published in previous years. The NSO said that this year’s edition is amply enhanced in various ways. Data is presented on 12 important statistical domains, these include demography, education, employment, the economy, business, transport and use of renewable energy

One of the new topics is Renewable Energy Harvesting, which shows that 16% of all photovoltaic installations in Malta was registered in Gozo in 2014, double the proportion registered in 2010.

Another new topic in the report is Education, showing for example that in 2014, the ratio of Gozo resident University of Malta graduates per 1,000 population was 10.4 against the Malta counterpart of 8.2. This ratio was particularly evident at Bachelor’s degree level and above. For MCAST graduates, the ratio for Gozo residents per 1,000 population was 7.2 against Malta’s 6.1.

First-time perspectives on a district basis in the field of Tourism, which is an important source of income for Gozo, give rise to noteworthy insights regarding the current state of this industry not only in Gozo, but also in Malta.

In the report the figures for 2014 indicate that 72% of tourist bed-places in Gozo and Comino is in self-catering establishments including farmhouses, and 28 per cent in collective accommodation. Bed stock in self-catering establishments is concentrated in Xaghra, Zebbug and Gharb.

Data also shows that in 2014, 4.6 million passengers travelled between Malta and Gozo.

Another improvement is the increased presence of graphically illustrated data by way of a profusion of informative charts, including maps.
