Ghajnsielem Local Council wins 2nd prize in Mobility Action Awards

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Joe Mizzi today announced services and projects being taken by Local Councils in relation to European Mobility Week grants.

These included the implementation of the winning projects taking part in their respective competitions during the last two editions, as well as winning projects this year, from Ghajnsielem and Qormi.

Ghajnsielem Local Council was the winner of the 2nd prize in the Mobility Action Awards. The Council is to start operating an electric minibus on-demand service for the elderly and school children. The Council said that more details will be given during the implementation of the project.

The localities which won last year are Valletta, Cospicua, St Paul's Bay and Paola and they will be implementing innovative projects in their locality with the aim of reducing traffic congestion and offering better protection of the environment.

Minister Joe Mizzi announced that, in the coming days, the government will launch a tender in the form of a concession for a national car sharing service for transport operators and private companies to invest and operate this type of service nationally

The Minister said that the service will consist of a fleet of vehicles that make use of public parking places, identified as exclusive, and would need to begin as soon as possible

In addition to this call, TM is in the process in the coming weeks to issue a call for offers in the form of a grant for sharing bicycles and e-bikes, a service which is to be provided throughout the country, the Minister said.

"We are also working towards a better ferry service from other locations to Valletta and Sliema in order to encourage the popularity for the use of this service, therefore reducing congestion on the roads," added the Minister.

He also said that in the coming days the best offer will be chosen to carry out a study about the possibility of running the first tram line in Malta.
