Two solar farms to be used by the commercial sector on WSC-owned land are to be developed through an agreement signed by the Water Services Corporation and the GRTU, resulting in the setting up of a new company Malta Energy Ltd.
Minister Konrad Mizzi said that the solar farms, one at Ta’ Cenc and one in Mellieha, will be constructed over the reservoirs, and generate a minimum of 1 megawatt of electricity. They will cover around 13,000 square metres.
He added that during the last four years the Government invested more than €41 million in renewable energy, from which more than 20,500 families benefited from.
GRTU President Paul Abela thanked Minister Konrad Mizzi for supporting the Union in this venture. He said that, “today marks another positive step not just for GRTU and the members it represents but also for our country. By working together we will help the country reach its EU 2020 targets.”
Mr Abela stated that the GRTU “will ensure that all operators working in the renewable energy sector will have the opportunity to take part in this project.”
