Blood donation session in GozoThis Sunday is World Heart Day and this year the World Heart Federation is asking people all around the world to be “Heart Heroes” by making a heart promise to someone they love or care about.

These include, “a promise to eat more healthily, to get more active, to say no to smoking. A simple promise … for my heart, for your heart, for all our hearts.”

The National Blood Transfusion Service has said that with this in mind and in support of this special day, Gozitans are asked to donate blood in a session this Sunday in Gozo.

There will be a session this Sunday, the 29th of September. The District Health Centre in Xewkija will be taking donations between 8:00am to 1:00pm (last registration until 1:00pm).

The Centre is located in Triq tall- Hamrija, between the Primary School and the Bocci Club.

The Service reminded that it is important to always take your Identity Card, or Driving License or Maltese Passport and to drink plenty of water beforehand.

The Service thanks everyone in advance who intends to donate. To find out if you are eligible to donate blood please see here.

The WHO has said that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) take the lives of 17.9 million people every year, 31% of all global deaths. Triggering these diseases – which manifest primarily as heart attacks and strokes – are tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and the harmful use of alcohol.

These in turn show up in people as raised blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and overweight and obesity, risks detrimental to good heart health.
