€100,000 has been allocated for a new project in Xaghra, announced by the Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana.

In a statement, the Minister said that the project, which is being carried out in conjunction with the Xaghra Local Council, involves all the street lighting at the entrance of the village in 8th September Avenue, being replaced.

She explained that the purpose behind this project is for lower energy consumption, resulting in more efficiency and less light pollution. Apart from the environmental aspect, there is also the urban aspect, with the entrance to the village now being appropriately embellished.

“The Eco-Gozo strategy occurs in various ways, in every corner of Gozo and in this project we are collaborating with the Xaghra Local Council, with the Ministry for Gozo financing 80% of the project, through an investment of €100,000,” said Dr Caruana.

She added that, investing in communities is an important pillar of the Ministry for Gozo, not least in Xaghra and during this legislature the Ministry for Gozo has already invested fully in this locality, with infrastructure projects, social projects and cultural events.

The Xaghra Mayor Christian Zammit said that, as a Council, they felt the need to change the lighting system in 8 September Avenue, which was last carried out about 20 years ago.

He pointed out that in recent years, the effect of the elements of nature could be seen clearly on the lights and lamp posts themselves.

Dr Zammit thanked the Minister for Gozo for the collaboration, which he said, is increasing in strength between the Ministry and the Xaghra Local Council.
