Gertrude Abela, Europa Donna Malta President and breast cancer survivor, has presented the first talk in the new auditorium at the Queen Mary University of London Medical School facility in Gozo.

The talk was aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer and Gertrude provided the medical students with an insight into breast cancer from a patient’s perspective.

She highlighted the importance of patient support and how it complemented medical expertise.

Mrs. Abela also highlighted the multifaceted approach needed in healthcare, where staff focus not just on the patient’s physical health but also their psychological and social status.

“These factors are fundamental to their survival of the disease,” she said.

The medical doctors of the future also learnt about the important role of local breast cancer support groups and how to refer patients to such organisations.

Mrs Abela said that these groups keep patients informed and in good spirits during their diagnosis and treatment.
