An orchestral concert is taking place next month at the Astra Theatre in Gozo, featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor Raoul Lay, and violinist Anna Gockel.

The concert, part of Movements of Passion, the orchestra’s 19/20 Season will consist of Jean Sibelius Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major Richard Strauss Sinfonia domestica, which is being performed for the first time in Malta. These are two masterpieces of the early 20th century. The MPO explained that “although the musical depiction of one’s personal life was not uncommon, Richard Strauss’ work is a blatant realism of the family life, including arguments with his wife and screams of young children. Indeed, this multi-movement continuous work describes a twenty-four hour life-cycle in the Strauss household.”

Sibelius’ childhood dream of becoming a violin virtuoso is reflected in this concerto, in what can be coined as his first abstract work.

This concert features in #Inhobbok, organised by the Ministry for Gozo. As part of the Reaching the Stars scheme, young Gozitans may benefit from a 75% discount on tickets.

An exclusive shuttle service will be provided for patrons at a nominal fee of €2 . The service will run from the Mgarr Ferry Terminal following the arrival of the 6pm ferry. The return leg leaves at the end of the concert. Pre-booking is required on events@maltaorchestra.com

This special concert is being performed on Saturday, the 8th of February, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the concert are available to book from the Astra Theatre’s bar, or by clicking here. Ticket price €15-€30.
