26-year old Gozitan Notary Christian Zammit has launched his Labour EP electoral campaign at Calypso’s Cave, on the limits of Ramla Bay in Gozo, in the presence of Gozitan PL MPs Anton Refalo and Justyne Caruana, and Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat.

Justyne Caruana emphasized that Christian Zammit is not simply an important element constituting the future of the party, but is part and parcel of the current revitalized atmosphere in the party, which is embracing youths from all sectors of Maltese society in order to build a progressive movement in the Maltese Islands.

Anton Refalo stated that Christian Zammit, altough of a young age, has already contributed in the party echelons, and has occupied the Assistant Party International Secretary seat for a period between 2003 and 2005, and moreover, is currently Vice-Mayor of one of Gozo’s largest localities, Xaghra. Anton Refalo requested that if Malta is to be granted a sixth seat, this is to be given to a Gozitan candidate.

Christian Zammit revealed that he is contesting the EP elections because, five years ago, he was disappointed due to the fact that no Gozitan was contesting on the Labour party ticket. This, in his opinion, was a grave error as there was no Gozitan expressing the opinions, pleas and ideals of the Gozitan electorate. In fact, he stated that the present government is guilty of failing to obtain a priviliged status for Gozo, a failure which means that Gozo is not entitled to any supplementary European regional funds. Other islands in the EU boost their fragile economies through these special funds. The Nationalist government did not even file a report with the European Commission, before the adoption of the last EU Budget, in order to list Gozo’s problems vis-a’-vis double insularity. Moreover, this meant that Gozo is being negatively affected as the failure to obtain a priviliged status meant that Gozo be precluded from the majority of state aid, as this goes contrary to EU regulations.

Notary Zammit mentioned the use of buzzwords by PN administrations. The last but not the least is `Eco-Gozo.’The stark reality illustrates an incompetent administration as Gozo’s advantages in being small have never been exploited and no investment in solar, wind and sea current alternative energy has ever been made. Zammit also mentioned the lack of fiscal incentives for business ventures and the absence of foreign investment in Gozo; an absence which commenced years ago, and not simply as a result of the current global circumstances. Zammit stated as well that youths will be a priority in his agenda and he will do his utmost in order to assist his country in reaching the targets laid out in the Lisbon strategy, which meant more jobs, and better jobs.

Joseph Muscat stated that Christian Zammit’s candidature, along with the other eleven, confirms that the Labour list is the most qualitative one, and he was sure that Zammit will be an asset working intensely in the interest of the Maltese electorate, particularly, youths and Gozitans.
