The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has announced the scheduling of an archaeological site located at Triq il-Qacca, Xaghra, Gozo.

The site consists of two prehistoric burial cavities located to the south east of the Xaghra Circle at a mere distance of 53 metres from this important burial site. These features have been scheduled at the highest level of protection – Class A.

The Superintendence explained that these features have been recently discovered and up till now, have only been subject to a limited archaeological investigation. Two prehistoric recently discovered burial cavities scheduled as Class ANotwithstanding, enough data has been obtained indicating that these cavities contain an extensive archaeological deposit consisting of human remains, Neolithic pottery and traces of red ochre, the Superintendence said.

Given the site context, the Superintendent explained that it is clear that these two features (the depth of which is yet unknown) are an extension of the Xaghra Circle Neolithic mass burial site, extending the burial landscape of the Xaghra Circle.

Well done to all those concerned. Our Islands are so rich in history that we marvel how so small an island could possess so much culture.

It is important that we as the island’s citizens, preserve and appreciate, now much more than the past, our national historical sites.
