Gharb Day, is celebrated on the 29th of August each year, and is a popular event on the cultural calendar for the locality and this year frontliners were among those honoured as part of the celebrations.
Gharb Local Council explained that because of the current situation with Covid-19, this year’s celebration was organised differently and with a reduced programme.
The celebration began with the laying of wreaths in front of the Monument of Bishop M. Molina whilst the Gharb Anthem was being played.
It was exactly 26 years ago when the first legation of the Gharb Local Council agreed to choose the 29th August to celebrate Gharb Day.
The Council said that this date was chosen because in 1679, the title of Parish was given to the Gharb Church under the protection of the Visitation and was cut off from the territory of the Gozo Cathedral.
In 1994 the first Local Council for Gharb was elected. “Today it is called a Local Government which addresses the needs of the residents and the locality,” the Council said.
Mayor David Apap was present to mark the event together with Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo, MP Kevin Cutajar, Deputy Mayor Louis Apap, Councillor Tonio Mifsud and Councillor Joseph Mizzi.
On this occasion the Mayor was presented with the first Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for the locality, by the Friends of the Sick and the Elderly Association in Gozo and with the financial help of Mr. Paul Zammit. This AED will be installed in the coming days, the Council said.
Various awards and recognitions are presented to mark this special day for the locality. For this year the awards were given as follows:
On behalf of Mater Dei – Dr. Christopher Barbara
On behalf of the Service and Care of the Elderly Ms. Doreen Camilleri
On behalf of the Civil Protection to Mr. Mario Bonnici
On behalf of the Police Mr. Michael Caruana
To the Gozo General Hospital and the Armed Forces of Malta.
