The Citadel and the Visitor Centre in Victoria, Gozo, have both received Travellers’ Choice Awards by TripAdvisor.
On a visit to the Citadel, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri said that the two attractions come under the auspices of the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo.
He explained that “these prestigious honours are awarded after searching thousands of comments made by the same visitors who visited the particular attraction and are awarded to the top 10% of sites that receive positive comments, both for their appearance and product, as well as the quality of operation and service they offer.
The Minister for Gozo stated that tourism statistics show that over the years, the Citadel has been and still remains, the main attraction on this island, with an estimated one million visitors to the site every year.
He mentioned how in this time of particular challenges, the Ministry for Gozo has taken care to regularly disinfect this site in order to ensure the public health of all those who visit.
For the third consecutive year, the Citadel Visitor Centre has also won this same award. This attraction, located in two British-era reservoirs, exactly at the entrance of the Citadel, attracts hundreds of people to visit this unique experience, the Minister said.
Minister Camilleri explained that, “during the last few months the Ministry for Gozo has invested around € 70,000 in up-to-date technology in order to make this centre more accessible to the visually impaired. All this was done in consultation with national bodies including the CRPD and the FITA.”
The Minister concluded by thanking the Cultural Heritage Directorate and all the staff for their commitment and continuous work to ensure that attractions such as the Citadel and the Visitor Centre maintain the highest possible standards.
