During a meeting with the Nationalist Party’s Parliamentary Committee for Gozo, a representation was made on behalf of Gozitan Learning Support Educators (LSEs) working in Malta, where they stressed that the education authorities are allegedly “allowing injustices in the way certain LSEs among them, are being transferred to work in Gozo, while others aren’t.”
In a statement, the PN said that a representation was then held on behalf of the parents of Gozitan students with disabilities who need LSE assistance.
The parents stressed the need for the education authorities in Gozo to create a “pool of permanent LSE relievers” who will be able to replace other LSEs when they cannot attend work for one reason or another.
“In this way, students with disabilities do not end up being sent home as has sometimes happened when their LSE does not attend work, thereby avoiding an injustice to these students,” they said.
Gozitan Nationalist MPs Chris Said and Kevin Cutajar requested that the Committee dedicate a special meeting to discuss the subject of LSEs and that the education authorities should also be invited to explore the solutions.
The Parliamentary Committee for Gozo meeting also discussed the preparations being made for the reopening of schools in Gozo in the context of Covid-19 and the uncertainties being felt in this regard. It also looked at how the pandemic is affecting trade in Gozo, particularly tourism.
Chris Said and Kevin Cutajar insisted that “the challenges of Gozo are not solved by Prime Minister Robert Abela visiting the island as he did during this week, instead, Gozo needs action, facts and solutions.”
