There were 129 new Covid-19 cases recorded in the past 24-hours and 67 recoveries, making 1,988 active cases. 3523 swabs were taken. The Health Authorities said that today’s cases are “still being investigated.”

Superintendent of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, speaking at the Friday briefing on Covid-19, said that from the 1,988 cases, there are currently 62 active cases on Gozo, up by 1 from last Friday, with 5 patients in the Gozo General Hospital.

In Malta patients in hospitals are as follows: in Mater Dei there are 14 in ITU, 11 in IDU and 32 in other wards, 28 at Boffa, 18 at St Thomas Hospital, 2 at Karin Grech, 59 at Good Samaritan and  7 at Mount Carmel, making 176 including those in Gozo.

The average age of patients in the last 7 days is between 24 and 44. Prof Gauci again stressed the need to follow the need for the wearing of masks, social distancing and hand washing. She also appealed to the elderly to take the necessary precautions and follow the mitigation measures.

The total number of cases are now up to 6,893. There have been 4,832 recoveries and 73 deaths, the Ministry said. There have been 355,515 swab tests taken since the start of the pandemic in Malta.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and has not yet updated for today and is therefore still showing for Malta that the 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000, is 316.9 the number of cases recorded is 6,590 as well as 65 deaths. Malta is currently in twentieth position in the EU/EEA and UK. Belgium is at the top with 1631.1, followed by Czechia with 1594.4.

Public Health Authorities said that anyone who needs to take a test should call 111 to set an appointment, even if they do not have any symptoms. It is to be noted that due to the large volume of calls, it can take some time to get through.

All swabbing centres are open every day, including the one in Gozo, however appointments must be made on the above number.
