The Malta Union of Teachers is appealing with the Government to stop the construction work being done during school hours near the Gozo College Middle School in Victoria, Gozo.

The Union explained that the school is in fact sandwiched between two massive construction projects, which it said, is “leading to serious health and safety shortcomings and to unbearable noise from the sports complex project.”

The same point was also highlighted by the PN at the end of last month, when Clyde Puli the Opposition Spokesperson for Education, said that it is not acceptable that Gozitan students and teachers are having to suffer noise and dust in their classrooms.

He also said that, “Government projects should not disrupt learning or impede a healthy environment for students and teachers in the school who are doing their job alongside the ongoing work on the new Primary School and swimming pool project. The situation is already difficult enough with the pandemic.”

In a statement on Thursday, the MUT said that “heavy machinery is stationed literally inches away from students and educators in classrooms and no conversations could be held in corridors, let alone lessons in classrooms.”

The Union warned that “students and educators should not be put at risk and everything has to be done to protect and safeguard everyone at the school.”

In view of this, the MUT said that it has notified the Government of industrial action on Monday with members at this school to report to work, instead, at the neighbouring senior school.

“This, unless heavy construction works are stopped during school hours and the required health and safety measures are taken to the satisfaction of the MUT,” it said.
