Update: Death announced of Paul M. Cassar at the age of 87

Update from PN below – The death has been announced of Mr Paul M. Cassar at the age of 87. He was a former Mayor of Victoria, Gozo, from April 2000 until March 2003.

Paul M. Cassar was a librarian by profession, and acted as Gozo’s Head Librarian for a record period of forty-two years.

He had also occupied the post of General Secretary and President of Socjeta La Stella for many years, including during the early years, pre-dating the 1986 inauguration, when the building of Teatru Astra and the La Stella Band Club was conceived.

In a statement the La Stella Philharmonic Society said that it is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mr. Paul M. Cassar on Wednesday, who for decades led the Society to the office of Secretary General and President, and among the others, under his guidance, built the present Band Club and the Astra Theatre.

Last December a new publication was launched from the Astra Theatre, penned by Paul M. Cassar – Progett ghal Dejjem – with exclusive photos of the construction process, the write-up chronicles the mammoth task and challenges of the committee in acquiring the land and contracting the building works of the theatre.

The La Stella Philharmonic Society extended its condolences to the Cassar Family. “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.”

The funeral Mass will be held at 4pm, on Monday, the 11th of January at St George’s Basilica.

The La Stella Band will greet the coffin with funeral marches upon its arrival in front of the La Stella Club and the Astra Theatre at 3.15pm.

The College of Local Councilors of the Nationalist Party (KKLPN) has expressed its sadness over the death of Mr. Paul M. Cassar, former PN Mayor for Victoria.

KKLPN said that he was elected on behalf of the Nationalist Party and served in the second and third terms of the Council (1997-2003). He served both as a Councilor (1997-1998), Deputy Mayor (1998-2000) and as the fourth Mayor of Victoria from 2000 to 2003.

In a statement, it said that among other things, Paul M. Cassar was responsible for infrastructure improvements in the locality and introduced the parking scheme for residents in Victoria, as well as being involved in the start of celebrations for Jum il-Belt Victoria.

The KKLPN extended its condolences to his wife Carmela, his son George and other relatives.
