Animal Commissioner Alison Bezzina, writing on Facebook this morning, said that is had been brought to her attention that a sign has been “brazenly” put up in Marsalforn, Gozo, which warns dog owners that their pet will be poisoned if they mess outside the property.
“This sort of threat is illegal and the use of poison for such ghastly purposes even more so,” said Ms Bezzina. “It goes entirely against the Animal Welfare Act and if found guilty a perpetrator can be punished by a 3 year prison term. A police report is underway,” she added.
Ms Bezzina pointed out that however, “it is also illegal for dog owners not to pick up after their dogs, but it is never the dog that should pay for their owner’s irresponsibility.”
She stressed that, “poisons need to be regulated and access restricted, sooner rather than later. Please have your say in the public consultation that is currently open for your suggestions, which can be accessed by clicking here.
In the meantime, she warned everyone to “watch out for your dogs and pets.”

Horrid is the thought of someone to poison an animal but some irresponsible dog walkers makes a monster out of a saint if each day they have to watch out where they walk as soon as they come out of their abode. The person who put that sign up should just remove it and police should forget about it. That sign does not portray a criminal but a totally pissed off tenant.
There is a central strip in my neighbourhoo and we have plants planted in it. It has become a good place for dogs to fertilize the soil but the she dogs seems to prefere the tarmac better. Dogs have bladders and do not have to pee because they need but because they want to mark their territorry. They smell and if they find out that that spot was owned they have to conquist that spot by leaving their liquid seal. Thank heavens for rainy days which cleans all conqured territory and make the neighbourhood smell fresher until Ms. Who will walk her 4 legged pet and soon enough standing on 3 of them re conquer the spot again.
I suggest to the Marsalforn house owner to get a sign from the Council saying that pet droppings are to be picked up and spend a couple of days filming to catch a perpetrator or two and report them to the police Red handed.
I see a lot of pet owners that don’t pick up after their pets so enforcement should be stepped up. Every where you go there is poop and its not funny when you step on it. This is happening due to lack of sanitation enforcement like trash everywhere as long as its not in front my property and so on. The pets are never at fault selfish people are.
