According to official data a week ago, Malta was second only to the UK in the number of anti-virus doses administered in relation to its population: the UK was 41%, Malta’s figure an impressive 30%. This compares with the mere 12% inoculated in France, Germany, Italy and Cyprus.
Although the Maltese figure – presumably – includes the number of second doses, this seems remarkable.
It is even more remarkable when one considers that, on Gozo, the over-75s are still waiting to be called for their first jab.
A note was circulated on social media inviting all of them to call 145 “to be given an appointment date.” And what happened? They rang, waited probably ten minutes for an answer, gave their name, address, ID, phone and mobile numbers… and were told to expect to hear from the government “in the coming days.”
Meanwhile, at the start of another holiday weekend, cars were driving unchecked onto the ferry, heading for Gozo where there are, at last count, 86 active cases with 4 people in hospital, 2 in ITU.

The actual number of people who have had a vaccination is about 126,000 or about 25% of the population not 30%!
However, it does seem to have speeded up and as far as the over 75s in Gozo being asked to ring 145, I rang last Thursday, got straight through and was told to expect a text or a letter within 7 days.
We (66 and 64) are still waiting, called 145 a week ago and were told maybe within a month and no they can’t check to make sure we are on the list with correct contact numbers – no help at all!
“Within the coming days”, or even within 7 days, considering that Easter is up-coming, is not “making an appointment”.
I suspect Malta does not actually have the vaccines to give us over 70s or even over 60s – there are supplies of astra zeneca because people are scared of taking it ………….. 145 is useless – leave your details and someone will call you – that was over a week ago so good thing I am not holding my breath.
