The Gozo Chamber of Advocates said that during the meeting with Justice Minister Zammit Lewis on Monday, which was also attended by Court Services Agency CEO Eunice Grech Fiorni, they once again discussed the outstanding issues that need to be addressed.
The Gozo lawyers have been on strike since the end of September over a number of issues, including lack of staff at the Court, administration failings and the state of the Court building itself.
In a statement on Thursday, the Chamber said that this includes more staff in the Gozo Court – on this point, it said authorities promised that “from today there should be a new person trained to work in the Court Registry;
“Marshal for the Gozo Court – By no later than Monday a new usher should be reporting to the Gozo Court to assist in the necessary work.”
The Chamber added that it had been informed that with the current sectoral agreement, an usher could be appointed as Court Marshal after at least least five years.
“In this sense, unless a different agreement is reached on the sectoral agreement, the Gozo Court will not be able to have a Gozo Court Marshal for another 3 years, it said;
A Judge for Gozo – the Minister will “discuss this point internally” so that it can be implemented as soon as possible with the intention that a Constitutional seat be established in Gozo without the full implementation of the law;
The Gozo Court building – the Chamber said that the Minister will “discuss this matter with the relevant entities so that this point can be addressed in the shortest time.”
The Chamber concluded by saying that, “in the event that what was promised during the meeting is carried out, in particular if a trained person starts working in the Court Registry and if a new usher starts reporting in the Gozo Court, the Gozo Chamber of Advocates will be in a position to assess the situation and also consider the possibility for lawyers to resume attending sittings at the Gozo Court.”
