Those aged 50-59 can register for booster jab from Monday - FearneHealth Minister Chris Fearne said today that over 100,000 people have so far received the booster vaccination.

He explained that around 6,000 people aged over 70 have so not yet taken the booster jab, and urged them to call 145 to request an appointment to take it.

People in the age group 60-69 are currently receiving the booster, and Dr Fearne said that around one third of these have already had the jab administered.

He stressed that 6 months would have ideally elapsed between the last dose and the booster. So some people aged over 60 will not have yet received their appointment, but will do so when the correct time has elapsed.

As from Monday, those aged between 50 and 59 will be able to register to receive the booster jab by emailing vaccine.gov.mt This is with the aim of all in this age group to have been offered the booster jab by the end of next month.

The Health Minister explained that the European Medicines Agency is expected to take a decision on the authorisation of Covid-19 vaccine doses for children aged 5 to 12 years in the coming days.

He said that Malta had already ordered the doses for children and that they would be sent to Malta the moment the authorisation is issued.

Dr Fearne estimated that if this is granted, the children’s vaccination programme should start in mid-December and that the first children to be given priority will be those with chronic and vulnerable diseases.

The Health Minister said that currently there are no plans to introduce further restrictions relating to Covid-19.
