The Public Health Authorities have been notified that a resident in Malta has tested positive for Monkeypox.

The 33-year-old man was recently abroad in a country where some cases of Monkeypox have been confirmed.

Authorities said that the man has “mild symptoms and does not need to be treated in hospital and was asked to remain in isolation at home.”

The Health Ministry advised that Monkeypox is a rare infection caused by a virus that does not spread easily from person to person. In most cases it is a mild illness that does not need treatment and the patient will recover from it within a few weeks.

The first symptoms of Monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, inflamed glands, chills and fatigue.

The Ministry said that a rash can also develop, often starting in the face and then spreading to other parts of the body. The rash changes and goes through many stages until it finally forms a crust, which falls off after a while.

Health Authorities stressed that it is “always important to keep your hands clean and to wash your hands often with soap and water or with an alcohol-based sanitiser, especially after coming into contact with someone who is unwell.”
