A pilot project has been launched for Gozo schools with two main aspects: education and community.
Through this pilot project, while the schools will continue to be known by the name they currently have, they will also be given individual names, meaning that they will have an individual identity.
Although it was launched in Gozo by the Education Ministry together with the Malta Union of Teachers, the initiative will in fact cover all schools throughout the country.
In Gozo there is a primary school in practically every locality that has been named after a personage from each of those localities in celebration of their work and place in local history.
“We want to celebrate the work of these personalities who in their lives contributed not only to our country, but also to every locality they came from. It is a sign of respect for these Gozitans and Maltese who dedicated their lives to work that left a mark on the communities of our people,” said Education Minister Clifton Grima.
He added that, “we are taking this step to continue bringing our educational systems closer to the community of which they are an integral part.”
Prominently displayed in every school there will be information about these personalities, their lives, their achievements and what they did for our country, the Minister said.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said, “Initiatives like this continue to strengthen the identity of our schools.”
He said that this pilot project will increase the knowledge among students and the public in general about the lives and works of these personages.
Marco Bonnici, President of the MUT, said that this initiative supports the hard work of educators as a community with an identity linked to the same school and locality.
He went on to say that this project launch should be the beginning of a series of decisions in a wider context that leads to an evaluation of the college system which is so necessary.
In a symbolic ceremony in Sannat, Professor Guze Aquilina is remembered, who among others remains alive for the achievements he made as a linguist, writer and academic. Aquilina’s love for the Maltese language and the excellent work in Maltese was an inspiration for generations of Maltese scholars and authors and continues to be so today.
the original decision to delete the reference to important personalities with the “excuse” of the college creation could hardly have been sillier and more ridiculous!
I agree a hundred per cent. When it was done I thought they were insane or crazy to name schools for saints instead of Maltese or Gozitan famous persons. Now I am happy that it was done at last. Now, this should be done to street names and not use saints anymore.
