Nature Trust – FEE Malta said that it carries out clean ups-on a regular basis in different areas of the Maltese environment.

Following one such clean-up and during the sorting, NTM said that 13 items of the same object were found – an object that they couldn’t classify. After checking, it turned out that these items were actually petards.

NTM explained that some of these clean ups are chosen for litter monitoring, where all the litter picked up is then sorted into different items and counted.

It was during one of these sorting exercises, the NTM volunteer came across the 13 items that turned out to be petards.

NTM reiterated “the importance of proper disposal of litter, from re-using what we can, recycling properly the items we can no longer use, and dispose properly of other trash, especially hazardous waste.”

Nature Trust – FEE Malta stressed that they were very lucky that the petards did not go off either during the clean-up or the sorting exercise.

The NGO also issued “a gentle reminder that a police permit is also required for any planned fireworks, and this is for everyone’s safety.”

Nature Trust – FEE Malta expressed its sincere thanks to the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) and The Malta Police Force for their prompt help in collecting the petards to be disposed of in a safe manner, “with immense relief that they did not go off.”
