The Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has said that with the end of the spring hunting season for turtle dove and quail, alongside the levelling off of bird migration, the ”bird protection camp” in Malta came to a close last week with – 37 poachers convicted, 300 live birds confiscated.
‘We have now completed this year’s spring mission on the Maltese archipelago. Since the beginning of March, a total of 20 CABS members have been working on Malta and the smaller neighbouring island of Gozo to take action against illegal bird-trapping and later against the shooting of protected migratory species,” said CABS.
CABS stated that ”during the bird protection camp, which lasted more than eight weeks, 37 poachers who had either stalked, trapped or hunted protected species were convicted by the police.”
The officers confiscated a total of 39 nets and 11 electronic decoys during the operations, said CABS. ”Around 300 live birds, including golden and Mornell’s plovers, red-throated pipits and various species of finches and buntings, for which no proof of origin was available, were also confiscated.”
