In 2022, total expenditure on Research and Development (R&D) amounted to €105.3 million, corresponding to 0.6% of GDP, this was an increase of €5.4 million compared to 2021, the National Statistics Office said today.
The NSO said that Basic Research is the major type of R&D expenditure in 2022 and labour costs represented 71.3% to total R&D expenditure.
The highest rate of R&D activity was noted in Engineering and technology amounting to 52.1% of total R&D expenditure.
The NSO noted that 3,419 employees were engaged in R&D, with 1,969 on a part-time basis.
In 2023, the highest disbursements of Government Budget Allocations for R&D (GBARD) were recorded in the R&D financed from General University Funds for Social Sciences.
