The Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organisation is a non-profit organisation whose purpose is to commemorate the Great Siege of Malta on the 7th September in Xaghra Gozo. This organisation is devoted to the promotion of the main historical events related to Xaghra. It seeks to reenact a specific event in history by the incorporation of activities and dress into an interactive presentation that seeks to give the observers a sense of stepping back in time. This group promotes the appreciation of Malta’s historical and cultural heritage by allowing people to relive important events of the past.

This group has been invited with the collaboration of the Associazione Giostra Cavalleresca of Sulmona Italy to take part in the eleventh edition of the Giostra Cavalleresca of Europe that will take place between the 5th and 7th of August 2011. On the 5th and 6th August, the group will perform in Piazza Maggiore. The group will also meet the mayor of Sulmona and the authorities at the town hall where there is going to be the exchange of gifts between the various guests of seven European delegations present at this European manifestation. The group will take part in costume in the historical procession. There will also be a horse race with the participation of a knight wearing the Maltese Cross. If the knight is victorious the group will have the right to participate in the race next year and will win the Palio.

The group consists of twenty re-enactors including Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette and knights of the Order of St. John. The group is under the supervision of the President Mr Victor Theuma. This visit to Sulmona is being co-ordinated with the help of Mr Kevin Sciberras, Head of the Gozo Culture Office within the Ministry for Gozo. The group said that it “will do its utmost to represent Malta and to promote the Maltese Islands as a tourist attraction.”
