The Ministry for Gozo has said that the infrastructural works taking place at the government farm in Xewkija, will result in the establishment of a Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in Agriculture and the Environment as part of the action plan of eco-Gozo 2010 – 2012. This project is being carried out in collaboration between the Ministry for Gozo and the University of Malta.

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, visited the ongoing work, which, which, the Ministry said, with an investment of around half a million Euro will be providing needed space for administrative and other facilities at this center. Works are underway on new scientific laboratories for research on the ecology and agriculture in Gozo by the students and staff at the University, the modernisation of greenhouses, the excavation of two reservoirs, new poultry houses and cattlle pens. New machinery for the farm is also being purchased.

The Ministry said that plans for the use of the centre include the testing and promotion of good environmental practices and systems in agriculture, animal husbandry and poultry. Attention will also be made to studies on cultivated crops, fruit trees and endemic plants, as well as those relating to the protection of water resources and soil. The cenrtre will have a computerised irrigation system to make it possible to carry out research on sustainable water use in agriculture.

The Minister said that this is another Ministry for Gozo project that is being carried out in light of the government’s vision to make Gozo an ecological island. “The centre aims to strengthen agriculture in the island, through raising awareness as well as with the assistance given to Gozitan farmers and herdsmen.”

“This centre will also serve as an agri-tourist attraction, enhancing tourism in the agricultural field. The rural environment of the island is a key part of the features of Gozo, concluded the Minister.
