Families planning a self-catering holiday in Europe this summer will fnd supermarket prices lowest in Majorca and Portugal, according to the new Self-Catering on a Shoestring report by the UK’s Post Offce Travel Money.
The survey compared the cost of a basket of 20 items that can be bought in a supermarket for a family of four taking a one-week holiday in twelve different destinations.
Ghasri in Gozo was placed fifth out of the twelve countries that were involved in the survey, where a weekly shop amounted to £70.12p, the cheapest was C’an Picafort in Majorca at £57.67p.
Key fndings in the report include:
• Led by Majorca, Spain takes three of the top four best-value spots for a weekly family supermarket shop, the items included in the survey were bread, cheese, butter, eggs, cereal, milk, orange juice, jam, coffee, sugar, tea bags, barbeque briquettes, ham, tomatoes, pizza, water, cola, wine, lager, and a toilet roll.
• Portugal’s Algarve is second cheapest, just a few pence more than Majorca
• Prices vary dramatically across the eurozone, especially in the Greek islands, where Kefalonia is better value than Crete or Corfu.
The Post Office Travel Money survey found that the items cost only £56.67 in the Balearic island of Majorca, this was followed by Algarve in Portugal at £57.78, Costa Blanca in Spain at £65.31, the Balearic island of Menorca at £66.71 and Ghasri, Gozo at £70.12.
Andrew Brown, the Post Office Head of Travel Money said that, “although self-catering can be a great way for families to save money, they should choose their destination carefully. Majorca and Portugal are great value options but Greece is looking more expensive.”
He went on to say, “another thing to consider when budgeting for a self-catering holiday is how much drinks will cost. Our research shows that families could pay just over £5 for a coffee, a soft drink, a glass of wine and a beer in Gozo or Majorca but £10 or more in Brighton, Crete and Lanzarote.”
