Starting this Wednesday, football enthusiasts in Gozo will be able to enjoy some exciting matches at the Gozo Stadium for the UEFA Regions Cup – Intermediate Round, the Group 1 competition runs until Sunday, the 9th.

Each UEFA member nation may enter one representative amateur team into the competition. Preliminary and Intermediate rounds are held to determine teams progressing to the final round.

The Malta Football Association will, as in the previous two editions, be represented by the selection from Gozo. The Gozitan team will be under the guidance of coach Gotthard Conti.

The MFA said that as witnessed in past tournaments the level of teams' organisation and keen sense of competition reflect the serious nature of this important amateur football tournament and provides excellent entertainment.

The UEFA Regions' Cup is a football competition for European amateur teams. It was first held in 1999 and has been played biennially since. The current champions are Eastern Region Ireland who beat Zagreb Region Croatia 1-0 at the Tallaght Stadium, Dublin in 2015.

Previous winners are, 1999 Italy, 2001 Czech Republic, 2003 Germany, 2005 Poland, 2007 Bulgaria, 2009 Croatia, 2011 Portugal, 2013 Italy.
