Heritage Malta has just received an exact replica of one of the Hagar Qim Statues which has been placed in front of the showcase in which one finds on display the original statues at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta.
The statue was presented to Ms Sharon Sultana, principal curator at the National Museum of Archaeology, by Mr Manuel Baldachino, director of the Limestone Heritage Parks and Gardens. Ms Sultana thanked Mr Baldachino for the donation and said that there is a continuous effort to make the National Museum of Archaeology accessible to a wider range of audiences. Museum visitors can touch the statue which was made using globigerina limestone of the same type as that used to make original statue and thus become familiar with its shape and texture. This reproduction is especially beneficial to persons with a visual impairment.
It is planned that in the near future more replicas and other aiding tools will be introduced in the museum so that visitors of various abilities can have a memorable visit. The Limestone Heritage Park and Gardens is currently working on a replica of another of the Hagar Qim statues to be placed in the Hagar Qim visitor centre when this is opened in the near future. The National Museum of Archaeology in Republic Street Valletta is open daily from 9am to 7pm. Like all Heritage Malta sites and museums it will be closed on Good Friday.
