"Gozo is under siege" through purely speculative overdevelopment" - Local CouncilsOn Monday, the Parliamentary Committee on Gozo Affairs started a discussion on “excessive development and environmental and urban degradation in Gozo.”

The meeting took place following a request put forward at the last meeting from the Gozo Regional Council and Gozitan Mayors to put this matter on the agenda.

Gozo’s Local Councils, represented by the President of the Gozo Region Dr Samuel Azzopardi, stated that “Gozo is under siege with the purely speculative overdevelopment that is being approved by the Planning Authority, with the most affected places being the historic and urban centres, the outskirts of localities and the countryside.”

Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Chris Said, who is a member of the Committee, said that 38 proposal was presented by the Gozitan Local Councils – proposals which are all important and which should be considered. “Many of them should be implemented immediately before it is too late.”

Dr Said, went on to say that he and his fellow PN representatives on the Council, Kevin Cutajar and Joseph Ellis, “made our interventions and insisted that urgent decisions be needed to save everything we can. We cannot miss what makes Gozo attractive – its beauty and the particular identity of each locality.”

The discussion will continue on Monday, the 24th of May. The public will also be able to follow the whole discussion on the Parliament website. The meeting is scheduled to start at 4.30pm.

Any organisation or person who wants to take part, even online, can put in a request by emailing: gozo-affairs.committee@parlament.mt

Gozi is OVERDEVELOPED therefore there is no need of more development, therefore there is no need of Planning Authority. Full Stop. Gozo does not need more hotels, does not need more apartments or houses, no more shops no more industries or restaurants or clubs or bars. We have more than enough. We do not need young couples to repopulate Gozo. (Was this someone’s idea?). I’de say each Local Coumcil should have more power on his locality plus Gozo is so small that anything that happens in one town effects the other and consultation between all councils should become a regular event. And Gozo is above political parties in this delicate state of properly called ‘under Siege’.
