Qala Council to contest appeal by developer to build "tool shed" in ODZThe Qala Local Council has said that it will “continue to defend the unspoilt areas around the locality.”

The Council in a statement said that it has registered to contest an appeal by a developer who wants to build a small “tool shed” with a skylight and a parapet and had been proposed on what is actually, the Council said, a “site of a pile of stones on an ODZ untouched, pristine area outside Qala and which is visible from Comino.”

Qala Mayor Paul Buttigieg argued that, “if the room is built, there will be a structure in an unspoilt area which can be seen from miles around, spoiling this area of high Landscape Value forever.”

The application was first refused in December 2019, then it was refused on appeal last March by the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal. In May, the Local Council, represented by Mayor Paul Buttigieg, appeared in Court to defend the refusal decision

The developer is now trying yet another appeal to transform this small pile of stones into a building, the Council said.

This appeal is set to be heard before the Tribunal in the coming days and the Local Council said that it will contest the development as it has done before.

Qala`s mayor actions to look after our environment should be followed by other mayors in different localities around Malta and Gozo.

Has anybody asked what tools the landowner might need to leave on the site, and why the building needs a skylight and a parapet?
