Sette Giugno riots commemorated in Xaghra
The events of Sette Giugno, the bread riots of 1919, were commemorated in Triq Bullara, Xaghra, three days early on June 4 under the patronage of Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono.
At 9.15 a.m., Archpriest Carmelo Refalo celebrated Mass at the basilica of Our Lady of Victories and animated by organist Ivan Attard.
During the official ceremony Graziella Bigeni read the poem “Lill-Vittmi tas-Sette Giugno” written by Can. Giljan Refalo Rapa, while Lara Ann Xiberras and Nathaniel Gauci read other literature relating to this national event.
The Xaghra Primary School Choir sang songs and the National Anthem.
Trumpeteers Jason Camilleri and Stephen Borg of the Armed Forces of Malta, played the Reveille and the Last Post, after which Mrs. Debono, Xaghra mayor Joe Cordina, Vincent Grech, chairman of the Gozo Regional Committee responsible for the organisation of the national feast days, Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo representing the Xaghra Collegiate Chapter and Clergy, and others, placed flowers against the wall of the home of Guzeppi Bajada, one of the victims of the riots.
