Gozo Bishop Mario Grech is currently representing the Maltese Episcopal Conference in the Assembly Spring Session of the Commission of the Bishops Conferences of the European Community, (COMECE). The Conference commenced in Brussels, Belgium, on the 18th of March and concludes today.

The basic subject of the meeting is, “The conflict in the Middle East and South Asia – what the European Union can do.”

The main speakers are Bishop Klaus Kramer, President of Missio / Aachen and Mr Otmar Oehring, Board Director of Human Rights tal-Missio/Aachen, on Christians in the Middle East and South Asia, Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Secretary General of NATO, on the prospects of war in Afghanistan, and Mr Marc Otte, Special Representative of the Union for the peace process in the Middle East.

Another speaker is Mr Niall O’Neill, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament on the European elections in June.

The Bishops will also hold a meeting with Mr Alexandr Vondra, Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, in charge of European Affairs.
