Gozo Age Concern, formed last May to highlight the need of care homes on Gozo, are set to launch their first membership campaign on the island. An initial 3,000 leaflets in both Maltese and English will be distributed, inviting people to join at a cost of five euro per annum.
The leaflet also details the structure and aims of the organisation, its intended future activities as well as the benefits that members will enjoy.
Commenting on the launch, Fr Mario Cassar, President of the Association said: “I am delighted that our first membership campaign is now underway, we urgently need the support of the general public in ensuring that the elderly on Gozo are treated fairly and have access to quality support services”
In Malta there are 15 care homes, 7 run by the government, 2 by the church and 6 by the private sector. There are just three homes in Gozo, which are run by religious communities, caring for a total of just 30 residents and only available to females.
“There will be over 7,000 people in Gozo over the age of 65 by the year 2015; it is therefore imperative that we recognize and respond quickly to this fact. With the help of members and supporters, we intend to do exactly that” Fr Cassar concluded.
